The Legend of the Eddaic Verses
The Saga of Innocent-Of-Conviction
Once a young Sage named, Innocent-Of-Conviction decided to test the Gods; to determine which deities deserved the highest honour. He decided to test Their honour by being rude to Them. Innocent-Of-Conviction assaulted the Gods by uttering familiar blasphemies at Them.
First, the Sage approached the deity called, "The-Adversary-Of-All-Other-Gods" - the jealous deity who claims that He alone is Divine. The Sage called Him a cruel and ill-tempered, "Dessert Demon." So addressed, the deity erupted into a furious display of wrath and anger. The deity then bullied Innocent-Of-Conviction into silence.
Next, the Sage approached the second deity called, "The-God-Who-Fears-Oblivion-And-Neglect." He is the God who wants all men to "know Him", and to "love Him." To assault this deity, the Sage made reference to His past. Innocent-Of-Conviction then said: "An entity that's born in an animal shed, doesn't even smell like a God!" The deity was displeased, and reprimanded the Sage with condescending words. The second deity concluded with this remark: "You are forgiven. Go, and sin no more!"
Finally, the Sage sought out the Race of Gods called, "The-Eddaic-Gods." Innocent-Of-Conviction found the Gods at a feast of pork, and mead...And to Their faces; denounced Them as false Gods and Devils - that satisfied Their lusts, and procreated with monsters. There was a moment of silence; for the Gods were not used to such bold impieties. Then, one of the Gods spoke, and said: "Stranger, I give you this warning...If I draw my sword, it will not be sheathed again until it has your blood on it!" After a moment, the Sage replied: "Friend, I have found courage...And a brave man does not fear the wrath of Gods!" In unison, all of the Gods laughed...Because, the audacity of the Sage gave them pleasure.
The-Eddaic-Gods invited Innocent-Of-Conviction to join Their feast...for They admired any man who dared to confront power. Such a man (They declared), was a natural 'Confederate-Of-The-Gods'.
Thus, Innocent-Of-Conviction stayed with The-Eddaic-Gods for the rest of his years, and wrote down the verses of Their lives, and Their deeds...The birth of the Eddaic Verses. Before his death, it is said that, Innocent-of-Conviction layed these verses into the Well-Of-Wyrd...Thus these verses, became part of our ancestral memory.
The moral of, "The Saga Of-Innocent-Of-Conviction" is: "Beware of Gods who cannot laugh!"
